Dear Claudia & Staff,
Q: I'd like a new hair color so I'll look my best when I start a new job soon, but how do I know how to get the best look for my skin type, which is a pale "olive" type of color? Do I even have to try and match my skin type to my hair color, or would any color I picked do? I have very dark hair now, but I'm sick of it.
-- D.
A: "YES” to matching your hair to your skin type, and “NO” to picking just any color-- that will not do. And because this dilemma applies to everyone I am going to address ALL TYPES of SKIN COLORS.
Most salons have a VARIETY of COLOR SWATCHES on a board or ring that you can bring up around your face. This way you can see if the color makes your skin look DULL or if it BRIGHTENS you up instantly.
Sometimes just LIGHTENING your natural color a shade or two will do the trick without going to a whole different color. It also grows out nicely this way.
Some WIG STORES will also let you try different color wigs on to see what you look like in a particular color. (But ask first-- some will charge for this service.)
Another way to pick a hair color is to look at the colors of your CLOTHES, for that will often give you a clue as to what colors would work best. Like if you wear a lot of blues, then I would look at cool hair colors. And if you wear more yellows, then I would look at warmer colors.
As a rule Spring is paler colors, Summer is truer colors, Autumn is bright and warmer colors, and Winter is darker and rich colors.
This is also a good time to think of adding even more than one color to your hair to complement the new color you do choose. This will give you more depth. There are many ways to do this, such as PANELS placed in different places to show off the NEW COLOR STYLE more, or HI-LITES or LOW-LITES that will add another dimension.
Also, always make an appointment with your HAIR STYLIST to have a consultation about what color is best suited for you and your overall style. You also need to consider what you can AFFORD and know about the UP-KEEP of your new color choice as well.
Good luck!
Dear Claudia & Staff,
Q: Now the weather is getting colder I have noticed my skin is getting dryer. What’s the best way to treat it?
-- K.
A: Drink plenty of FLUIDS (not counting alcohol) to help KEEP the moisture in the skin. There are DIFFERENT WAYS to get fluids; one is the obvious, like liquid drinks such as WATER, and then there are VEGGIES, like celery. Think of other ways to get fluids into your body as well.
You can also WASH your FACE and LEAVE IT DAMP, then put a good facial moisturizer on over the damp skin. This will LOCK IN extra moisture. A SUN BLOCK is good to use as a hand lotion. (This is also a good way to help keep age spots from forming on your hands.)
Using an EQUALIZER is also good for replacing moisture that the dry air from heaters and cold winds take away from the skin in cold, winter months.
